The Spanish Moss Trail traces its roots back to the historic Magnolia Line Railroad, which began operations in 1870. After the railroad ceased service in 2003, the Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority acquired the corridor in 2008 for utility use. In 2011, they granted a surface easement to Beaufort County, paving the way for a 14-mile recreational trail.
Since opening in 2013, nearly 10 miles of the trail have been completed and are now enjoyed daily by walkers, runners, and cyclists. The trail serves as a scenic and active link between the City of Beaufort and the Town of Port Royal, offering both a historic journey and a vibrant community space.
