The SC7 Expedition Team, Coastal Carolina University, and SCDNR as we continue expanding the Smart Reef system, an initiative launched during last year’s Expedition.
This effort builds on existing Smart Reef sites in Georgetown, Charleston, and Port Royal Sound, with the goal of enhancing our understanding and protection of South Carolina’s coastal environments.
The Smart Reef system collects real-time environmental data that feeds into Coastal Carolina University’s interactive ocean-atmosphere-wave-hydrologic modeling system. This advanced platform helps inform critical discussions on tropical storm impacts, including flooding and storm surge, and provides insights into broader coastal threats affecting ecosystems and local economies.
In addition to disaster preparedness, the system supports diverse research into reef ecosystem dynamics, offering valuable information on how these habitats interact with environmental pressures—ultimately aiding conservation and sustainable management efforts along our coast.
