The Jocassee Gorges, located in northwestern South Carolina, were named one of National Geographic’s “50 of the Last Great Places.” Here, the clear waters of Lake Jocassee meet the dramatic Blue Ridge Escarpment, where forested slopes drop 2,000 feet in just a couple of miles, marking a sharp transition between the mountains and the Piedmont.
Named “Place of the Lost One” in Native American legend, the area is known for its rich cultural history and exceptional biodiversity, blending mountain and piedmont ecosystems. In the 1700s, naturalist William Bartram explored the region, discovering the famed azalea and praising the landscape as “inexpressibly magnificent”—a view still shared by visitors today.
