The Edisto River gets its name from the Native American word edisto, meaning “black,” a reference to the river’s dark, tea-colored water caused by tannins from decaying leaves and vegetation. It holds the distinction of being the longest free-flowing blackwater river in the United States—and one of the longest of its kind in the world.
This unique river ecosystem is a vital habitat that supports a variety of rare, threatened, and endangered species, including the red-cockaded woodpecker, southern bald eagle, wood stork, loggerhead turtle, and short-nosed sturgeon. The Edisto’s ecological richness and natural beauty make it a treasured resource for wildlife and a destination for nature lovers alike.
